Saratoga One a Days – 9/4 Closing Day

Coming down to the last day of the meet we have a tight race for the best worst daily handicapping bloggers of the meet! Thanks to everyone who checked in daily, I’ll have a write-up of the entire thing sometime this week with some thoughts on the meet.

Caleb @CalebWVU

Race 2 – #7 Mariah’s Appeal: As this nightmare of a meet finally draws to a close, it would be nice to end this contest on a winning note. I am targeting race 2 on today’s card because I believe all of the major players are very vulnerable. If Just Katherine repeats her race in the Wilton the rest of the field will be racing for second. However, that race appeared to come out of nowhere, and I’m skeptical of her ability to stretch out to nine furlongs. Linda has two runners in today, but both of them feel more like a desperate attempt to win the meet training title than a truly well-meant placing. Raging Sea did have legit trouble last out, but I need to see improvement before I back her at a short price. After all the eliminations, that leaves me with #7 Mariah’s Appeal as my top selection. She defeated a very nice Brad Cox filly on debut in Merlazza, but then went to the bench for a while. She drew in as an MTO last out and ran well, just tiring late while making her first start in six months. She has a right to improve with that race under her belt, and Phil Bauer and Rigney Racing are in the midst of a fantastic meet and year. There doesn’t appear to be a ton of speed in here, so I like Mariah’s Appeal to set the pace and take this field gate to wire.

Race 9 – #11 Kasimba: Looks to be lone speed in this turf sprint and Optix has a note from the last race that this is a turf horse. I think the race 2 back proves the note right and that figure is competitive here on both Optix and Timeform. The #3 American Know How ran a huge 113 TFUS figure last time out, but I’m going to bet against seeing as that was a huge improvement off any other fig he’s run.

Race 1 – #1 Woke Up Quick: I need a price to catch Caleb and I might as well be predictable and take a JJ/Morley horse and make it super memeable by finding one out of a Bernardini dam in a turf sprint getting the rail. With that said, I find it very interesting that Castellano is up on this mount as Morley horses almost always need a start so it’s rare to see his first call jockey up. This one has been training quite well downstate and I would imagine JJ + Saratoga is a sign of confidence that this one is live as they could wait a week and catch easier fields at Aqueduct. I expect JJ to send from the rail and in a field where I don’t see any monsters, he’ll try to steal this one on the lead.
