Saratoga One a Days – 8/9

Although Caleb may be red hot in real life, he’s been cold as ice in the contest letting Josh catch up and tie him. Mark continues to trail, but the gap is down to $11.

Race 8 – #1 Into Happiness: Raging Sea very well could be the horse to beat in here, but I never like to back these promising two-year-olds who disappear for a year and resurface at three. If she continued to progress then she will be a handful in here, but I don’t want to take a short price based on juvenile form. I’m going back to the well on a horse I have already scored with once this meet. Despite the modest speed figure, Into Happiness ran a monster race last out. She missed the break terrible, came out a dozen lengths last, and absolutely inhaled the field late. She has seemed like a totally new filly in her last two starts, and this one mile distance should suit her just fine. She has more tactical speed than she showed last out, so I’d like to see her break cleanly and sit midpack. It is encouraging to see JV retain the mount, as he is hitting at 30% the last 60 days when riding for the Hennig barn.

Race 7 – #10 Clubhouse: With races being off the turf, I had a hard time finding any prices I liked on this card, so I went with a 3-1 ML horse who I think is a very likely winner. Clubhouse is coming off two clunkers but they were a turf allowance and a Derby prep race in the slop. He’s coming back to what I think he does best which is sprint on the dirt and gets a ton of class relief. With Saez aboard, he should be ridden aggressively from the 10 hole, and has a chance to wire this field. Plots out great on the Surface/Distance plot and should be very prominent in this race.

Race 5 – #1 Lady Prospect: With all the talk being given to Linda Rice’s current white-hot first half of the meet, Rudy Rodriguez is also firing, just on the down low. Rudy’s barn is notoriously streaky, and after being super cold since last fall, it seems he’s really pointed towards Saratoga and is reaping the rewards with a 22% win rate from 32 starters and a positive flat win bet profit. With Chad having two in here and Maker still taking money for some unknown reason, I think you get a square price on this 2-year-old daughter of Runhappy. Saez takes the mount, which means its live for Rudy as the two hit at 22% and he gets most of the well meant debut’s for this barn at the Spa. Gate work on 7/22 jumps off the page and I also know the connections who are quite high on this filly who hopefully gets lost on the board.
